January Athlete of the Month: Chris Ostrum

Congratulations, Chris! You’re our January Athlete of the Month!!

Chris has been at NoCoast for a year now and, in that time, he has not only transformed himself in the gym, but outside the gym as well. His improvements and dedication to nutrition has helped take his health and fitness to a new level. Chris didn’t seem like he had a lot of weight to lose when he started a year ago, but he has lost more than 25 lbs already and is only getting stronger every day in the gym. He is a husband of father of three beautiful girls and is setting a great example of what overall health looks like to them! We are so proud of you, Chris!

Quotes from Chris:

“I have learned that nutrition is a huge part of increasing my overall fitness and recovery. Starting with the No Added Sugar Challenge, I really learned how my diet plays a big part in not only increasing my fitness but also aiding in recovering.”

“My wife and children have also benefited from my CrossFit and nutrition learning by improving our overall nutrition. We started out eating pretty healthy but the nutrition programs have definitely helped us. CrossFit also helps me maintain a good mental state which of course helps my family as well.”

Age/Weight:

35 / 198 lbs.

Pre-CrossFit weight:

225 lbs.

Athletic/Sports history/highlights:

Growing up in a small town I didn't have access to much but I played basketball growing up and continued playing pickup basketball into college.

How long have you been CrossFitting?

1 Year!

How did you get into CrossFit?

To be honest, I watched a highlight during the '17 games and finally got around to checking it out in January of 2018.

What is your favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

Airbike! But rowing is growing on me as a favorite also.

What is your least favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

Running, definitely running.

What is your most memorable CrossFit moment?

The 70 calorie bike benchmark was one of my favorites. I practiced quite a bit leading up to it and was super happy with my last time. One day I'll hit that 90 second mark.

How does nutrition play a role in your fitness and recovery?

I have learned that nutrition is a huge part of increasing my overall fitness and recovery. Starting with the No Added Sugar Challenge, I really learned how my diet plays a big part in not only increasing my fitness but also aiding in recovering. I have found that meal prep doesn't have to be time consuming and just takes a bit of planning before going to the store.

How has CrossFit improved your overall wellness?

CrossFit and NoCoast specifically has helped me improve not only my strength but has also helped me get leaner. Along the way, I have also learned a lot about nutrition.

How has CrossFit changed your family?

My wife and children have also benefited from my CrossFit and nutrition learning by improving our overall nutrition. We started out eating pretty healthy but the nutrition programs have definitely helped us. CrossFit also helps me maintain a good mental state which of course helps my family as well.

Advice to new people:

My advice to new members would be to stay persistent and not get discouraged. Many movements take a lot of practice and time to get the hang of. Compete with yourself and don't worry if you come in first or last - as long as you are giving it your best effort the result will be satisfying.
